What is the best free weight exercise for increasing the size of the back part of the shoulder muscles?

A really good free weight exercise I have found is when I hold the weight in one hand bend at the elbow over my shoulder and then lift the weight straightening my arm in the process. That seems to strength my shoulders and some back as well as triceps. Another very good upper body strengthening activity is to bench press, although those are not free weights. I would also suggest push-ups.

Pullups aren’t free weight but they’re awesome too.
