Should A 13 Year Old Boy Being Lifting Weights Or Doing Body Weight Exercises?

I am 13 years old, 5′1 110 pounds, I am wondering whether I should be lifting weights or doing body weight exercises. I play rugby union so I need to be strong and have a cut build.
I currently lift weights and take whey protein. what should I do?

It is fine for you to lift weights, as long as they are not too heavy for you to lift with too much strength. Basically, don’t be a body builder, but lift to gain some muscle mass and tone, get a bit cut. Protein is OK, but you have to stay hydrated. Ask a trainer or professional about specifics since ever one’s body is slightly different in that regard.

I’m a bodybuilder (21) and I started when I was 16. I would wait until 15 or so, unless you want to mess up your growth plates and top out at 5′3″.
Stay cut for now, body weight exercises are fine. Sprint!
But you have the right idea! Being so young and, judging by your current research, intelligent, you have a promising future as an athlete or intellectual! (Or both!)
    Best of luck!

depends on how much you lifting, just benching you defiantly should be going over 100, in fact id say 50-65 pound should be you maximum. Anything over that and you could hurt yourself. As far as just weights and working wih those, start with 10’s and slowly work up to maybe 30’s. also stay on top of abdominal work (sit ups) thats important for contact sports. but the most important thing to remeber is that you wont see result right away, you have to keep doing it, weather its 3 days a week or 7 days a week its not gunna be instant. Hope dis heellpped!

Don’t overdo it. Your body is still growing, you REALLY don’t need the whey protein unless you don’t eat meat. Moderate weight lifting won’t hurt you much though. Don’t try and see just how much you can lift though… injuries at such a young age could hurt your development.

You can do strength exercised such as dead lifts and squats and clean and jerks to be building your strength for rugby, now do I suggest you work out with free weights at at 13, HECK NO! You need to grow! Start working out when you’re done hitting puberty!

I would say body weight only and negative on the whey protein. consume your protein for chicken and fish!!

If you want to be a midget.
It might stunt your growth. It looks like you have yet to hit your growth spurt yet.
keep it light for now and stick to dumbbells pullups and pushup…nothing heavy.

At your age, you should keep the weights light – to moderate and do more repetitions to work the muscle.
Small reps/hi weight is not good for youngsters.
    Great Q. Hang in there.

Only if you know EXACTLY what you are doing. You could seriously screw up your joints if you lift too much because your bones are shifting due to puberty.

Lifting weights may put pressure on your spine and stunt your growth slightly.
